Erin’s journey through rap, streetwear & ballet

With her brazen rap verses and edgy trendsetting style, Erin is a force to be reckoned with in the emerging R&B/pop scene. The recent release of her debut song, titled “Maze of the Starflies”, amassed a combined 800 million streams across two major music streaming sites in a month. Aery Central sat down with Erin to chat about her love for rap, visions for dance culture, and childhood ballet memories.

Having come from a musical family, she started piano and choir lessons from a very young age. Erin says that her grandmother is a big influence on building strong foundations of her artistic talents. “Actually, my grandma tried to get me into classic vocal performances,” she laughs, “but I somehow found the world of rap through my brother and his friends. Maybe part of it is because I’m very chatty? I also just talk really fast.” Aside from singing, Erin’s grandmother also wanted the young idol to follow her footsteps in going into theatrical ballet. “Ballet definitely gave me a good foundation for my later transition into hip-hop.” Erin shared how ballet was actually a struggle for her because she “couldn’t sit still” and that ballet teachers always had a hard time trying to get her to stay on-pace. “I wanted something more dynamic and high-energy. But I have yet to perform in front of my grandma,” she said, “I feel like [grandma] would still be unimpressed.”

Her older brother was also a big influence in her music tastes, Erin said. “We’re pretty close. His taste music and involvement in streetwear culture has been a big influence on my music taste.”

Now, with Analos Music Group, Erin will be joining an upcoming pop group, of which details have yet to be unveiled. “I want to explore my style some more. I think now is still the time for me to experiment with different styles,” she said.
